The Culprit T-Rex is the most versatile bait in Culprit’s offerings and you’re gonna need it for May fishing.
by Dustin Wilks
In May, bass are still in all stages of the spawn in the Mid South and starting the process up north. Even if you fish only a lake or two near you, chances are those lakes are different. And various parts of a given lake or river can also be different. This is where the versatility of the six-inch Culprit T-Rex comes to play.
When searching for fish that are in all three stages, the T-Rex fishes beautifully weightless, just twitch along in a back and forth or “walk the dog action.” This is achieved through rigging it with a little bend in the worm.
Rig it this way and twitch it around any shallow cover, flats or spawning pockets. This will catch fish in all stages of spawn. Rig on a spinning rod with 15lb. braid. Direct braid to hook (4/0 offset) or with a fluoro leader if water is clear.
When casting solely at targets, if you can see the beds or only casting at stumps and want a slow presentation, then rig it “wacky style.” Just hook it in the middle of the worm with a #1 or 1/0 straight shank hook. When you twitch it, the T-tex will have an irresistible folding action that bass can’t resist.
The third main situation the T-Rex excels in during the Spring months is on a shaky head. This is used when bass are a bit deeper, maybe on docks or little points and spawning out of sight. This is money in that situation. Use 1/8 head to start and adjust with conditions.
This bait is also extremely effective on Carolina rigs on flats and points adjacent to spawning areas. I also can’t leave out Neko rigging…and, well you get the point — T-Rex is one very versatile bait that excels year round, but especially in the Spring.
