The 4 inch and 5 inch Riptide Mullet for Stripers have been a very effective bait for me during the fall striped bass migration for several years. I use these baits on open sand beaches along the ocean fronts and while casting from rock jetties bordering inlets. The 4 inch mullet is a great bait when the stripers are keying in on small bait such as spearing and rainfish. The 5 inch mullet is an effective bait whenever the stripers are feeding on baby menhaden, mullet or sandeels.
The most effective way to fish these 4 and 5 inch baits is rigged on an open jig head with a good quality hook. When using the 4 inch mullet, I usually rig the bait with a jig head ranging from ¼ oz. to ½ oz. depending on the depth of the water and the current strength. When using the 5 inch mullet, I usually rig the bait on a jig head ranging from ¼ oz. – ¾ oz. depending on the depth of the water and the strength of the current.
The most important factors to keep in mind is that the bait needs to be presented at the correct speed and depth so that it will look natural to the fish. Achieving the right presentation is all about finding the right jig head weight and line size to get that perfect presentation. Once you have those factors figured out just a slow steady retrieve with the current with a couple gentle lifts should be all that’s needed. Give the Riptide mullet a try, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
